Steps to Becoming Job Ready
In addition to an up-to-date resume, you need to create a portfolio that showcases the quality of your work. Future employers want to know what sets you apart from other applicants, so use your portfolio to demonstrate your unique passion and commitment. Don't forget to tailor the portfolio to each job you're applying for. For a web design position, your portfolio should contain visual elements. For web development, focus on your coding skills.
Other important job ready elements include:
Appearance - First impressions are important. Get a good night's sleep and freshen up with a shower or a bath. Make sure your hair is neat and keep makeup and jewellery to a minimum. You should also dress in a businesslike manner, which means no jeans, baseball caps, sandals, shorts, etc.
Attitude & Commitment - Your attitude and sense of commitment will help you interview well. Be friendly, open to new ideas and always maintain a sense of humour.
Time Planning - It is important to report for interviews or to work on time to establish your dependability. Calculate how long it takes you to get ready in the morning, leaving extra time for unexpected situations.
Transportation - Planning ahead is necessary to arrive at the interview or workplace on time. Plan your route ahead of time, and if necessary, do a trial run. If you take the bus, research the route and how long the trip takes. In case of bad weather or unforseen events, always plan for alternate transportation. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes early for your interview.
